After Malaysia, the AirAsia Group plans to roll out its ride-hailing service in other countries including Thailand and Indonesia.

AirAsia is continuing its move into multi-travel, multi-consumer product services with the creation of AirAsia Ride, launching in Malaysia this week.

The ride-hailing portion of the brand's super app is initially being rolled out in the country's capital of Kuala Lumpur and the wider Klang Valley region.

Other cities in Malaysia will be introduced throughout the remainder of 2021, the company says, with Thailand and Indonesia slated for the next phase.

The service will be integrated into the carrier's air options, allowing passengers to reserve transport from the app to coincide with departures and arrivals of flights.

The ride-hailing sector is the region is dominated by the likes of Grab, which bought out its rival Uber in 2018.

Amanda Woo, CEO of AirAsia Super App, says, "We have been championing air mobility by flying over 700 million people around the world over the past 20 years and, with AirAsia ride, we aim to empower people to move around more easily, making full use of the AirAsia super app technology to enjoy amazing experiences.

"AirAsia Ride inherits the DNA of running a low cost model which enables savings to be passed on to guests and strives to offer the lowest fares on the road, introducing great value to the highly competitive e-hailing ecosystem."

Recent developments in the airline's super app strategy have included the acquisition of Indonesian ride-hailing and payments firm Gojek’s business in Thailand.
