Khon is popular. However, a new generation of Thai performers is
reshaping the arts scene and expanding the boundaries of Thai
entertainment, such as the following bands challenging conventional
perceptions of local performances.
Junkyard Theatre
Junkyard Theatre is a unique show blending comedy, street dance, Thai dance, and recycled props.
In the midst of the pandemic when the economy took a big hit, a group
of friends in Phuket united to create 'Junkyard Theatre,' a show that
blends comedy, street dance, Thai dance, and recycled props, offering a
unique and unconventional experience.
Led by creative director Zachary Underwood, the diverse group of 25
performers from different nationalities showcases the vibrant mix of
Thais and expats in Phuket. Guests can enjoy 'A Night at the Junkyard,' a
2.5-hour dinner cabaret featuring quirky musical numbers, elaborate
sets, and comedic acts.
The show is held every Saturday for audiences aged 16 and above, with
tickets priced at 2,500 baht (US$71) each. Additionally, the group
provides show venue packages for large gatherings or private events.
The Stumbling Swingout
The Stumbling Swingout headline events like Music the Park, they create a lively atmosphere for all to enjoy Swing dancing.
Who would have ever thought that millennials will enjoy good ol'
Swing hits from Benny Goodman? The nine-member Stumbling Swingout did.
Founded in 2017 by Swing dance enthusiasts, this nine-member band was captivated by the timeless music of the 1920s-1940s.
Their talents gained recognition in 2022 when they headlined the
Music the Park event hosted by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration
(BMA) at Suan Rot Fai Park. Drawing crowds of all ages and backgrounds,
the Stumbling Swingout created an atmosphere where everyone could enjoy
the music and dance, regardless of their familiarity with Swing.
Accompanied by Swing dance teachers from the Jelly Roll Dance Club,
the band encouraged attendees to break the ice and learn the dance
moves. The Stumbling Swingout has continued to entertain at various
cultural events, including Unfolding Bangkok and Museum Siam, providing
memorable vintage evenings filled with fun and participation.
With their infectious music, reminiscent of the Tom and Jerry theme,
Swing enthusiasts and newcomers alike are in for an easy and enjoyable
listening experience. While the band has performed at corporate events

Kidbuaksipp
Kidbuaksipp has successfully adapted traditional Thai performances for modern audiences.
Captivating audiences at the May Sea Games closing ceremony in
Cambodia, the Thai performing group Kidbuaksipp showcased their unique
expression of "Thainess" to the world. With their win on Thailand Got
Talent in 2011, Kidbuaksipp has built a successful career,
reinterpreting traditional Thai performances for the contemporary era.
Co-founder and dance coach, Klakul Agradechanat, shared that the
group has been performing together for 18 years and takes pride in
adapting Thai local performance arts for today's audience. Their deep
knowledge of traditional performances ensures that each event,
conference, or party they perform at is an enjoyable and culturally
authentic one.
Last year, Kidbuaksipp amazed audiences at the 9th Asia-Pacific Forum
on Sustainable Development with their "human shadow play" performance.
Inspired by the traditional puppet shadow play from Thailand's southern
region, they used this art form to convey stories about development
goals.
In addition to their performances, Kidbuaksipp is dedicated to
passing on their skills to the next generation. They actively coach
youths from underprivileged backgrounds in the arts of Thai performance,
contributing to the preservation of these traditional arts.
