One weighty challenge for Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand’s international passengers will be asked, ever so politely, to weigh themselves at check-in.

Air New Zealand has something weighing on its mind… whether passengers checking in for flights will accept an invitation to step on the scales to be weighed.

Passengers of all shapes and sizes will be asked if they would mind weighing themselves as part of a survey to ensure more accurate data for estimating the load of an aircraft, including the average weight of checked and carry-on baggage, passengers, and even onboard meals and drinks.

All international-bound passengers over five weeks in June and July will be invited to jump on one of two scales, the other is for the passengers’ luggage.

The survey takes place every five years to help New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority gain greater insight into the load of an aircraft.
