Sri Lanka has set an ambitious goal to attract 2 million travellers from around the world by the end of this year. The country's tourism sector has been experiencing significant growth, with a particular surge in arrivals from India, which now holds the top spot. In the first three months of 2023 alone, Sri Lanka welcomed 46,432 Indian tourists.

To further promote the country's diverse attractions and tourism offerings, Sri Lanka Tourism organised a series of roadshows in key cities of South India. These roadshows served as a platform to highlight Sri Lanka's beauty and cultural heritage to potential travellers. Its extensive range of offerings includes wellness and yoga retreats, pristine beaches, vibrant shopping experiences, delectable cuisine, thrilling adventure opportunities, and abundant wildlife.

The tourism delegation, led by Harin Fernando, Minister of Tourism, included representatives from over 30 Sri Lankan travel agencies and hotels. The roadshows provided an opportunity for engaging with high-profile business leaders, investors, and stakeholders from the tourism industry. Through media interviews with prominent Indian media outlets, the Minister aimed to showcase Sri Lanka as a safe and secure destination, attracting leisure, business, and MICE tourism.

Sri Lanka's tourism sector has seen substantial economic benefits from the increased influx of visitors. In the first quarter of 2023, tourism earnings reached approximately US$530 million, compared to US$482.3 million during the same period in the previous year. This positive trend has fueled the country's aspirations to generate a total of US$3 billion in tourism revenue for the year.

The Indian outbound market holds significant importance for Sri Lanka, driving tourism growth and contributing to the country's success. To reinforce Sri Lanka's position as a preferred travel destination, the country has been actively engaging with the travel industry in India.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, along with hotels, resorts, destination management companies, and event management companies, is focused on building strong relationships with travel-trade partners in India, fostering mutually beneficial associations.
